Year of the Dog 2018

Kung Hei Fat Choy! As is my custom here at Feng Shui By Fishgirl, each Chinese New Year I feature the art of my dear friend Po Ping T’so Lo in Hong Kong. This year Po has deftly captured the Year of the Dog (maybe because the two adorable pups in the painting are portraits of her own pets). Gratitude to this wonderful artist and friend for giving me permission to publish her artwork.

Every cliche you hear about actual dogs– loyalty, honesty, doggedness, helpful and steadfast friend, playful nature, good appetite, intelligence, protective of loved ones, unconditional love– is true for people born under this sign, too.

Whatever you sign, may you find true love, true health, and true luck in the Year of the Dog!

MARC AND ANGEL HACK LIFE

This wonderful set of self empowering promises just arrived in my mailbox from Marc and Angel Hack Life. With their permission I share with you now. Check out their website for the complete information on how to order their books and sign up for their newsletter.

Make these promises to yourself, and keep them forever.

Repeat after me: “I promise…”

1.  “I will not hold the past against myself.” – Your problems, your weaknesses, setbacks, regrets and mistakes teach you if you’re willing to learn, or they will punish you if you’re not.   So let them teach you, every day.  Take everything as a lesson learned.  If you regret some of the decisions you have made in the past, stop being so hard on yourself.  At that time, you did your best with the knowledge you had.  At that time, you did your best with the experience you had.  Your decisions were made with a younger mind.  If you were to make these decisions with the wisdom you have today, you would choose differently.  So give yourself a break.  Time and experience has a wonderful way of helping us grow and learn to make better choices today, for ourselves and those we care for.

2.  “I will own my life and never deny responsibility for it.” – Through the grapevine, you may have learned that you should blame your parents, your teachers, your mentors, the education system, the government, etc., but never to blame yourself.  Right?  It’s never, ever your fault… WRONG!  It’s always your fault to a certain extent, because if you want to change, if you want to let go and move on with your life, you’re the only person who can make it happen.  It’s YOUR move to make.  It’s YOUR responsibility.  Own it!

3.  “I will live a life that feels right to me, not one that looks right to everyone else.” – Give yourself permission to follow the path that makes YOU happy.  And realize that some people in your life will refuse to walk beside you as you embark on this journey; they simply won’t approve no matter what you say, and that’s OK.  Sometimes when you commit yourself to creating your own happiness, it clashes with the perceptions of others.  Sometimes when you gain something great, you have to let go of something else.  And sometimes this ‘something else’ is a relationship that only wants you to do what they want you to do.

4.  “I will let go of relationships that are obviously not meant to be.” – Most people come into your life temporarily simply to teach you something.  They come and they go and they make a difference.  And it’s OK that they’re not in your life anymore.  Not all relationships last, but the lessons these relationships bring to you do.  If you learn to open your heart and mind, anyone, including the folks who eventually drive you mad, can teach you something worthwhile.  Sometimes it will feel weird when you realize you spent so much time with someone you are no longer connected to, but that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be.  You are exactly where you’re supposed to be.  We all are. (from the “Relationships” chapter of our book)

5.  “I will not let any situation permanently steal my smile.” – Even when times are tough, take a moment to pause and remember who YOU are.  Take a moment to reflect on the things that have real and lasting meaning in your life.  And then smile about how far you’ve come.  Honestly, nothing in this world is more beautiful and powerful than a smile that has struggled through the tears.  Any fool can be happy when times are easy.  It takes a strong soul with real heart to develop smiles out of situations that make us weep.  No matter how long it takes, it will get better.  Keep going.  Tough situations build strong people in the end.

6.  “I will keep stretching myself beyond my previous level of comfort.” – Just because you’re struggling doesn’t mean you’re failing.  Every great success requires some type of worthy struggle to get there.  Know this!  When you’re struggling, that’s when you’re growing stronger and smarter.  The more time you spend there, the faster you learn.  It’s better to spend an extremely high quality ten minutes growing, than it is to spend a mediocre hour running in place.  Every day, you want to practice at the point where you are on the edge of your ability, stretching yourself over and over again, making mistakes, stumbling, learning from those mistakes and stretching yourself even farther.

PERSONAL BOUNDARIES

Protecting your personal boundaries is as important as protecting your home space with feng shui. With the advent of social media more and more privacy is lost.

Here are a few easy push-backs to have ready in your verbal arsenal when people put their noses  where they don’t belong:

Why are you asking me that question?

Why should I tell you that?

Let’s talk about your finances (and/or sex life) instead!

I don’t know. I’ll get back to you.

Will it hurt your feelings if I keep my personal life private?

Ask my lawyer.

Alternatively, you can flip it around. If someone says to you, for example, “How can you afford that?” you can say “How can you NOT afford that?” or “How can you afford THAT?”.

YEAR OF THE MONKEY

It’s become a tradition at Feng Shui By Fishgirl to showcase the Chinese New Year art work of my dear friend PoPing Lo We’re celebrating the Year of the Monkey in 2016 and I think this particular PoPing illustration is wonderful. I thank the artist for allowing me to share it with my readers:

image1(May not be used or copied commercially without the permission of ©Po Ping T’so Lo.)

Here’s a little bit of what you can expect of the Year of the Red Fire Monkey (February 8th, 2016 up to January 27th, 2017.):

Although monkeys like to congregate in groups, success will come to those who break out from the pack and take risks that others won’t. This year it’s about individual efforts and putting action (the element of fire!) behind your wildest ideas. Innovation + Perspiration= Wealth this year more than ever.

Beware also the Tricksters in a Monkey Year. You know who they are. Deceitful people who charm you completely…then play you. They have one eye on your banana so they can grab it after misdirecting your attention to something unimportant. The message? Protect your bananas!

Ever hear of that saying “Not my monkey, not my circus”? This year is everybody’s monkey. Energy will be frenetic. Like a monkey jumping all around and swinging tree to tree and back again. It will be useful to become grounded in health and spiritual routine. Take time out for yourself and be still each day. There is an unpredictability to the world in a Monkey Year which makes it important to have something in your local personal sphere that is stable.  For example, if you’ve recently moved, don’t delay in unpacking and getting your home feng shui foundation stabilized. If you have let your exercise and diet go, try to get back into the groove again because there will be a lot of stress in a Monkey Year.

Happy #CNY2016 everyone! Kung Hei Fat Choi!

START YOUR NEW YEAR CLEAR

Screen Shot 2015-12-30 at 9.14.32 AM

Every once in awhile I stumble on another energy worker’s site and find something valuable for my readers. I don’t receive any financial gain from sharing this with you nor have I taken the course itself. However when I clicked here to read more about it I found the synopsis to be exactly what I would recommend to my clients. I especially liked the part about sloooowing down. That’s the first step to becoming more present in your life, more active and less re-active. I also recognize that Ms. Vogt’s e-course is very enlightened because she let’s YOU decide how much you are going to pay for it. The course is offered on a sliding scale of $10-25-40.

Please come back and share your comments here on how the course is working for you. And for my free article on how to let go of anything click here.

PERSONAL FENG SHUI PORTRAITS

IMG_6433

I’ve talked before about how symbols hold the energy of ideas and items that they represent. In the practice of feng shui it is important to utilize positive symbols to activate good ch’i (energy). Following colors and symbols that naturally belong in the feng shui bagua is one system of doing this. Incorporating these –and also identifying your own mythology of positive symbols–can be a powerful validation and reinforcement of good energy.

I was recently commissioned to do exactly that in this wedding gift to a young couple starting out. It’s a very large piece,  5 feet wide by 3.5 feet tall. This mixed media painting utilizes images and colors, dates and personal mantras that represent the bond between the two lovers. I am available to create personal feng shui portraits on request. Please contact Feng Shui By Fishgirl for more information.

HAPPY YEAR OF THE GOAT 2015

Year of the Goat © Po Ping Lo

Year of the Goat © Po Ping Lo

Kung Hei Fat Choy means happy Chinese new year in Cantonese. Wishing all of my feng shui friends around the world a very happy year of the goat (sometimes also referred to as year of the sheep or ram). As she has for several years now, my good friend artist Po Ping has loaned me the use of her painted illustration celebrating the astrology of the new year. Thanks, Po!

sheepyear_0001

What can we expect this year? As we head into the new Chinese calendar on February 19th, 2015 we might envision a steady path, contemplating our past achievements, and a feeling of calm should be our mantra this year. Peace efforts would be wise to be negotiated this year. If this is an impossible dream worldwide, think of your own individual life and make amends with those relationships that need it. For more info please go to this site that describes the year of the goat in more depth.
