ELEMENTAL HARMONY:Using the 5 Feng Shui Elements

Photo: Luxe Magazine

The 5 elements of feng shui are: Fire, Earth, Wood, Water, and Metal. Balancing those elements successfully in a room–and the overall home–takes some thought and planning. The room in the picture here is from the featured “Art House Del Mar Mesa, CA” in Luxe Magazine. Click here to see the rest of the home.

How are the elements covered in the room above? Obviously the fireplace represents the fire element, but so do the red/orange accents in the art and the cushions (so if you don’t have a fireplace at home, you can still add the element through color and even a red candle). Wood is surrounding the window frames, the floor is wood, and the side table is a tree stump–it doesn’t get much more woody than that!

Earth is in the plants as well as the brown leather sofa and chair. We can see the gleaming metal table stands but metal is also represented by the color white. Without the successful blending of the other elements, this room would have too much metal and feel very cold and uninviting.

Take a moment to see if you can discern where the water element is. You might have said the blue painting. But it is the glass table tops and the large glass windows that represent water and also the color black. In your own home, you can add water element through color, through pictures or paintings of water, through actual water features, or use of glass and mirrors.

In addition to successful element balance, the feng shui harmony created in this room can also be attributed to the use of yin-yang shapes (some round yin shapes and some square yang shapes). See if you can count how many of each in the picture. For example, the fireplace is yang but the sculpture over it is yin.

And last but not least, the art itself is great feng shui. From the vibrant colors in the painting to the wonderful curved yin shapes in the sculptures…but also notice the Calder kinetic piece hanging from the ceiling. Mobile art lifts Qi (ch’i= energy). Adding a mobile to a corner of your ceiling where energy seems dead is a good way to correct that and get some movement going in your environment. Can’t afford a Calder? Go to any museum store and find inexpensive paper mobile sculptures or create your own.

This ultra modern home has a very warm cozy feel to it. Bringing in the feng shui elements, softness in yin yang balance and use of fabric textures, and incorporating living plants throughout create that feel.

LIVIN’ LARGE: Travolta’s Floridian Dream

Actor John Travolta has created his dream home in Florida based on his love of airplanes and that is apparent not just from the 2 private jets parked right outside his window (yes, his property includes a runway that goes right up to his house and can accommodate a 707 jet!) but also from details such as the overhead fans shown here. They remind me of propellers. Although the home is not to my tastes, I do think the feng shui from the photos I’ve seen is pretty well balanced. The 5 elements (water, wood, metal, fire, and earth) seem to be well represented and the curvature of the windows and some of the furnishings are a positive yin counterpart to the masculine yang angles. My feeling is that the living room sort of resembles a plush airport lounge(…ew!). But that is exactly what Mr. Travolta was aiming for, isn’t it? I wonder if his actress wife Kelly Preston is as happy with the design of the house as he is? The couple has been very active in the relief efforts in Haiti. Go to Architectural Digest* to view more pictures of this house and tell Feng Shui By Fishgirl if YOU could live here.

THICK AS A BRICK

Photo from Apartment Therapy

I’m loving this brick wall bedroom that I found on Apartment Therapy. Not only is it eye candy, it’s really got good feng shui going on. How so? Note the arc of brick over the bed head. This acts as a continuation of the headboard feel and really adds a nice touch to anchor the bed in what otherwise might be too-high-to-be-cozy ceilings. It’s a stroke of luck that the brick wall just happened to have this arch in it (probably from a covered in arched window that is no longer there).

The matching equal sidetables with lamps gives feng shui balance (and improves Love & Relationship ch’i). The curve of the bench at foot of the bed echoes the arc over the bed, brings nice yin energy to the yang bricks and bed shape. The 5 elements are well represented here: earth(bricks), metal (bed), wood (tables and bench), water (crystal chandelier)…the only one missing is fire. But I’ll bet there’s a fireplace out of view somewhere in the room and that would solve it. If not, a red candle, pillow cushion, or a vase of fiery red roses would symbolize fire energy and also be a feng shui solution. It could be a problem to have a chandelier over the bed…but since it’s a crystal one, it feels like the energy would be diffused and that would counteract any feeling of having it pressing down on you while resting in bed.

I lived in a very old brick loft building with exposed brick walls for awhile in LA. The problem was the bricks crumbled and left brickdust around the edge of the walls. Even with the bricks painted white, it still didn’t stop the brickdust. For those with allergies, it could be a problem. Some type of sealant needs to be applied to raw bricks. But be careful to have good ventilation when you apply the sealant to avoid flashbacks…Thick As A Brick, anyone? Any ideas or comments are always appreciated.
