Innovative: 1931 Water Tower Home on 9 Floors

Innovative Conversion: 1931 Water Tower Turned into Modern Apartment.

From time to time I like to repost other people’s blogs. This one is from Freshome.com and shows the floorplans and several photos of a highly unusual home. What about the feng shui of this space? Well, traditionally spiral staircases are not considered to be great feng shui because they are like having a giant corkscrew drilling through your home. You can see/feel that exact thing happening in the photo of the master bedroom here. The spiral staircase was placed right in the middle of the room! Why?

Notice how the other rooms have a much better feel and the stairs are built-in and better placed to the sides of the building. Since the architects had the option to do it either way, I find it curious that they did so many different versions of staircases in the same home. I find that distracting and disjointed so that makes it less than perfect feng shui. On the plus side the circular shape of the building and the rooms is wonderful if impractical. To live on 9 levels (9 is a good feng shui number) without the benefit of an elevator would be daunting at times…especially getting to the bathroom or the kitchen.

I smiled when I saw this unique home is in Holland. Having just visited there recently I was impressed by the originality of design ideas there. Even the 16th Century buildings in Amsterdam were wonderfully innovative.

SEXY AIRSTREAM VINTAGE TRAILERS

SEXY AIRSTREAM VINTAGE TRAILERS Vintage Airstream trailers have incredible design appeal. Even though they were first introduced in the late 1920’s, they still have a cutting edge gleam and a certain sexiness to them. The one shown is a 1974 model that resides in our apple orchard on Deer Isle, Maine. There are two others on the property and they attract a lot of attention. I’ll be blogging more about them as we renovate and update the interiors with feng shui in mind. FYI: The … Read More

PLAYING IT SAFE vs. FUN SHUI

Photo courtesy "Hidden in France" blog

Why do so many people play it safe when they could be having fun instead? This photo from Hidden in France is an example of what I mean. Here we have very traditional furniture and room but because of the fabric/color choices, we’re looking at F U N S H U I instead of B O R I N G. Feng Shui By Fishgirl knows that home interior design is a highly personal decision. Before you decide on what your home should –or shouldn’t– look like, why not try putting together files of different looks? Have an Outrageous file, for example. Another file of Traditional. Eclectic. Asian. Colorful. Slightly Offbeat But Not Too Scary. When you’ve filled your files with photos from magazines and the internet, browse the folder with feng shui eyes. Let yourself FEEL the energy each look creates. How do you feel looking at a room filled with amazing art and bright colors? How do you FEEL when looking at soothing soft colors? Take the time to really get quiet and NOTICE how you FEEL. That’s a good place to start. Your home should reflect the way you want to feel while you’re living in it. If you feel more comfortable and more like yourself in traditional decor, then honor that and go with safety. If it makes you depressed, go for color! The important thing is to go with your gut to discover your own taste. After all, it’s your home not your friends’ or relatives’.

FANG SHUI: Feng Shui for Felines

Buy this book at Amazon.com

Having a good laugh is always good feng shui. This tiny book “Fang Shui: Feng Shui for Felines” pokes fun at feng shui in a very gentle way. If you or someone you know loves cats, this is a great gift that won’t break the bank. I used to give it to all my Feng Shui By Fishgirl clients.

Big cats–Tigers!–even have a year named after them. Read about Tiger Energy at my previous post. You might also want to check out what to do about cat litter boxes. While traveling recently I was greeted by several cats along the way in different cities. Some were quite beautiful…
